The international festival of electronic and experimental music, Sónar 2023, came to Barcelona from June 15 to 17 to celebrate its 30th anniversary with more than 250 musical proposals. The event, whose program included concerts, DJ sets, master classes, lectures, discussion forums and creative projects from more than 20 countries, wanted to focus on respect for the planet and people.
One of the main objectives of Sónar 2023 was to minimize the environmental impact of the festival through various measures and collaborative actions between the organization itself, equipment managers, suppliers and sponsors.
One of the lines of action of this important Sonar Sustainability and Commitment Plan was based on circularity. The organization distributed 450,000 reusable and biodegradable cups designed and manufactured by Ecogtos as a measure to reduce the ecological impact.
The Sónar 2023 cup was made with rice husks, the main raw material we use to manufacture Ecogots products, a small percentage of PP plastic and an additive that made it 100% biodegradable. The festival gave 360º circularity to the cups thanks to the collaboration of Estrella Damm and Abono Km0.
Specifically, Abono Km0, an organic fraction waste management company, was in charge of collecting all the dirty cups generated at Sonar 2023 to accelerate the degradation process of the containers and obtain compost and worm humus in approximately six months. All of this with the OK Home Compost certificate for all the materials used.
With this initiative, Sónar wanted to give back to the earth what comes from the earth, turning our biodegradable cups into compost that will be donated, thanks to the help of Estrella Damm, to a nearby field.
Festival attendees were able to purchase the glass at all the bars of the event at a non-refundable price of 1 euro. A glass that could be reused during the days of Sónar 2023 and whose cost served to cover part of this circularity process.
Thanks to initiatives like this, large-scale events such as Sónar 2023 are able to considerably reduce their environmental impact. So let’s hope that more events of these characteristics bet on Ecogots and promote more sustainable and respectful practices with our planet.
